About

This blog is about movies about big stuff – time, space, our view of ourselves and of others.

Our minds are tuned to detect a small fraction of our surrounding reality – not just the material world, but also the worlds of ideas, concepts and even reality. Jakob von Uexkull coined umwelt to describe how different animals in the same ecosystem pick up different signals. Your sense of smell differs from a bloodhound’s – but how about Truman’s world view compared with that of the producers of The Truman Show? Our sensorium is just enough for us to get by, but it does not approximate the larger picture – and our cognition is as impoverished as our senses. Big movies may give us clues to a bigger picture.
